Chapter 11

Connie pulled a chair over to Sable’s side and sat down.

Sable said, “Juniper’s going to talk about her accident. I don’t know if I can bear to watch it. Look how upset she is.”

Connie nodded. “All the hope has gone from her face. I can see Trixie standing behind her, but I can’t see Ned anywhere.”

Sable looked back at the screen. “He’s probably out somewhere planning on what he’s going to spend £10 million on.” She turned the sound up on the computer, and they listened intently as Juniper began to speak.

Ten minutes later, Connie passed Sable a tissue and said, “Poor Juniper. She looks devastated, doesn’t she? It must have been hard for her to admit she’s never going to play the guitar again.”

Sable gently wiped her tears away. “She’s incredibly brave. She held herself together so professionally.”

Connie said, “Trixie was in tears behind her. Did you notice that? I still didn’t see any sign of Ned Cutler. He might have been out of camera shot, though.”

“Don’t be kind about him. He’s the reason why Juniper’s had to give this terrible news to everyone. There’s going to be uproar amongst her fans, along with a lot of disappointment. No doubt comments and opinions are flooding the Internet as we speak. If her fans knew what we knew about Ned, they’d be after his blood.” Fresh tears escaped from her eyes. “It’s not fair! It’s just not fair, Connie.”

Connie patted Sable’s arm. “We’ll keep on with our investigation. If Ned Cutler was to blame for the accident, we’ll find the evidence we need. Don’t give up hope.”

Sable blew her nose. “I won’t; not with you at my side.”

“There is one ray of light for Juniper’s future. She said she’s got plans to set up a school to teach music. She can put all her years of experience to good use. I imagine she’d make a great teacher.”

Sable said, “I’d be tempted to learn the guitar myself if I had Juniper Vale as a teacher. I’m glad she made that decision. That’s comforting for her, and her fans.”

Connie got to her feet and said, “I think another hot drink is needed. We should speak to Dr Sinclair soon. When we overheard him in the hotel lobby, he was adamant he wouldn’t give Juniper a letter about her injuries. Why has he suddenly changed his mind? Do you think Ned Cutler forced him to do it?” She paused as she looked at Sable’s expression. “Of course you do. If Ned did force the doctor to write the letter, I wonder if the doctor will admit to that?”

Sable rubbed her forehead. “I don’t want to think about this anymore for a while. I think I’ll bake a cake.”

“Bake a cake? Since when did you start baking cakes?”

Sable stood up. She held her hands open and said, “I know I’ve never baked a cake before, but this seems a good time to start. I’ve been looking at some recipes online. They seem very confusing.
